Government Introduces Dedicated Two-Wheeler Lanes and Overpasses in Effort to Decrease Road Accidents

 

Road safety is a critical issue in India, given the consistently high incidence of road accidents and fatalities. Two-wheelers are involved in nearly 44% of road crashes, while pedestrians make up around 17%, highlighting the urgent need for effective solutions. Recognizing this issue, the government is developing a comprehensive plan to address road safety challenges.

Government's New Road Safety Initiative

The Road Transport Ministry is spearheading a new initiative with a focus on enhancing road safety for vulnerable road users (VRUs) like two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. This initiative entails the construction of specialized lanes for two-wheelers on state highways and urban roads, as well as the establishment of pedestrian foot over bridges (FOBs) and underpasses along major urban arterial routes.

Significance of Traffic Segregation in Road Safety

A pivotal aspect of this new plan involves the creation of dedicated two-wheeler lanes to address the issue of traffic non-segregation, which is a leading cause of road accidents in India. By segregating two-wheelers from larger vehicles, the risk of collisions can be significantly mitigated, thereby ensuring a safer road environment for all users.

Lessons from International Best Practices

Countries like Malaysia, facing similar challenges with a high volume of two-wheelers, have successfully implemented dedicated corridors for these vehicles along highways, resulting in a noteworthy decrease in accidents. India aims to emulate this success by adopting similar infrastructure improvements.

Emphasis on Pedestrian Safety with FOBs and Underpasses

Another crucial element of the government's strategy is to improve pedestrian safety, particularly in bustling urban areas where pedestrians are exceptionally vulnerable. FOBs and underpasses offer safe crossing points, reducing the likelihood of accidents and promoting smooth traffic flow.

Current Road Accident Statistics and Root Causes

The data indicates that two-wheelers are involved in nearly 44% of road crashes due to the lack of dedicated infrastructure and mixed traffic conditions, while pedestrians account for 17% of road crashes and 19% of fatalities. Non-segregation of traffic and inadequate infrastructure for VRUs are identified as primary factors contributing to the high number of accidents.

Initiative for Road Safety Enhancement - Consultation Paper 'SAFE'

The Road Transport Ministry has circulated a consultation paper titled 'SAFE,' aimed at formulating strategies to reduce road crashes and fatalities, with a particular focus on VRUs, who constitute over half of the road fatalities in India. The paper stresses the importance of improving infrastructure and enforcing stricter safety measures to protect VRUs.

Lessons from Malaysia and Road Safety in School Curriculum

Drawing inspiration from Malaysia's success with dedicated corridors, India can adopt similar strategies tailored to its unique needs. Furthermore, integrating road safety education into the school curriculum can instill responsible behavior among children from a young age, paving the way for long-term positive change.

Expected Outcomes, Financial Allocations, and Implementation Strategy

The plan aims to achieve a 70% reduction in accidents and fatalities per 10,000 vehicles and a 50% reduction per 10,000 km of road length. With a budget of Rs 14,000 crore allocated from central and state resources, a structured implementation strategy involving mandatory interventions and target-linked incentives is in place to ensure effective execution of the road safety plan.

Role of States and UTs, Accountability, and Measurement of Success

States and UTs play a pivotal role in implementing the plan, prioritizing critical issues, and promoting best practices at the grassroots level. Accountability and responsibility are emphasized, with states and UTs encouraged to adopt and propagate best practices in road safety. Success will be measured through annual targets, key outputs, and a state ranking system based on reducing road accidents, driving a culture of excellence and continual improvement.

The "Road Accidents in India-2022" report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways revealed alarming statistics: 461,312 reported road accidents, resulting in 168,491 fatalities and 443,366 injuries in 2022. These figures represent an 11.9% increase in accidents, a 9.4% increase in fatalities, and a 15.3% increase in injuries compared to the previous year.

 


We firmly advocate for the integration of innovative technologies into infrastructure and the promotion of road safety education, particularly among children, as significant steps towards enhancing safety on Indian roads.

 

Technology holds immense potential to revolutionize road safety road safety through improved traffic management, enhanced infrastructure, and effective enforcement measures. Advanced Traffic Regulation Systems (ATMS), utilizing state-of-the-art sensors, cameras, and communication networks, monitor traffic flow, detect violations, and respond to incidents in real-time. These systems not only enhance road network efficiency but also proactively identify and address potential hazards, thereby reducing accidents. Similarly, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in vehicles, such as driver drowsiness detection and automatic emergency braking, contribute to accident prevention by detecting hazards and providing timely alerts or interventions.

 

Emerging technologies like Emergency Response Systems and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication show promise in facilitating communication between vehicles and infrastructure, allowing drivers to receive warnings about hazards ahead.

 

Furthermore, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) augment road safety road safety through dynamic message signs, traffic signal optimization, and electronic toll collection, optimizing traffic flow and minimizing congestion, thus reducing accident risks.

 

AI and analytics offer significant contributions to road safety by analyzing real-time data to predict traffic patterns, detect risks, and provide actionable insights for improvement. Data analytics can identify high-risk areas and inform targeted interventions to reduce accidents and fatalities.

I try my best to dedicate my energy, time, and effort toward serving humanity and solving citizen's critical problems with the help of innovative technologies.

I am proactive with these NGOs in addition to being associated with the International Road Federation, Work Economic Forum, and other International & National NGOs.

ITS India Forum: Solving the big problem of mobility in India. Barring a few places, most roads in our country are congested, poorly developed, and unsafe. 

Driven by the conviction that technology holds the key to resolution, ITS's vision is to help create a safer, more efficient, and sustainable transportation system for India by leveraging ITS technology.

Proactive Citizen Foundation: An NGO created by young social entrepreneurs with a mission to solve two of India's most critical problems - Road safety and Mental health issues.

Every three minutes, one life in India is lost to a road accident. As of today, the number of accidents is growing, and the window between each accident is smaller, prompting us to resolve this immediately.

Additionally, mental health issues are now a severe issue in India. As per recent studies, over 73% of Indians are suffering from some mental health challenge.

The first step to solving this is an acknowledgment that mental health issues exist, and it's time we begin working to help solve them. We are solving it using Artificial Intelligence and VR. 

WA Foundation: WA Foundation is working towards environmental sustainability, parking solutions, and energy transmission to make our world what it used to be again.

We are conducting a global Hackathon to find Innovative Parking Solutions with Infosys and IITs. With over 50 lakh vehicles sold annually, Parking is going to be the biggest problem in this ecosystem.

With the deployment of a digital platform driven by a measurable Matrix of 16 sustainability parameters to rate cities and communities.

Green India Trust: As the name suggests, this NGO promotes the mass-scale adoption of a greener and sustainable ecosystem in India. Currently, we're working on reducing carbon emissions in the transportation and infrastructure sectors to bring our vision of a sustainable world to reality.

A crucial purpose in my life is to make India a better place than it was, and working with all of these revolutionaries, I'm sure gaining steps closer to achieving it.
