Utilising the Potential of India's Web-3 Ecosystem to Unlock New Opportunities

 

India is one of the world's most dynamic and fastest-growing markets, and the country's Web-3 ecosystem is no exception. With the country's rapidly expanding digital population, and the increasing adoption of blockchain-based technologies, Web-3 is becoming an increasingly important part of the Indian economy. Web-3 is an umbrella term that describes a range of decentralised technologies, such as blockchain, distributed ledgers, and smart contracts. These technologies create new, more efficient, and secure ways of doing business. In India, Web-3 has been embraced by the public and private sectors, with several government initiatives launched to drive adoption and development. For example, the Indian government has established the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to oversee the country's Web-3 ecosystem. Through MeitY, the government is helping to develop the infrastructure needed for Web-3 technologies, investing in research and development and creating regulatory frameworks.


The government is also providing incentives to businesses and startups to encourage the adoption of Web-3 technologies. The Indian web-3 ecosystem is built on a decentralised, distributed and immutable ledger technology, which makes it more resilient against cyber-attacks and data breaches. The private sector has also been investing heavily in the Web-3 ecosystem. Several Indian startups have launched blockchain-based solutions to improve the efficiency of processes such as payments, supply chain management, and digital identity management. These startups are also driving innovation in the Web-3 space, with new applications and services being developed. The growth of the Indian Web-3 ecosystem has been further spurred by the country's large and rapidly growing digital population. With more than 500 million internet users, India is the world's second-largest internet market. This means an increasingly large and technologically advanced user base for Web-3 technologies. The increasing adoption of blockchain-based technologies is also driving the Indian Web-3 ecosystem by large corporations. Companies such as Reliance, Tata, and Wipro are investing in blockchain-based solutions, and the central bank of India has launched a blockchain platform for interbank payments. Overall, the Indian Web-3 ecosystem is one of the fastest-growing worldwide. With the government's support and investment, the private sector's innovation, and the country's large and technologically advanced user base, Web-3 is set to become increasingly important in the Indian economy.

When we consider technology and how it has evolved, Web-3 is already dominating. I believe there will be a significant change in how financial data is collected, handled, and reported. Metaverse Banking elevates Net Banking by providing clients with a more individualised user experience and data visualisation. Several of the big banks have already begun making investments in this field. Recently, the Union Bank of India announced the opening of the Metaverse Virtual Lounge to give its clients a distinctive banking experience.

 

 

Customers can explore the lounge and get information on bank savings, loans, government assistance programmes, and digital initiatives like real-world experience, thanks to Metaverse. One essential use case for banking is the capability to virtually visit a bank. Machine learning can help us make the accounting process better. As a result, the creation of useful information for making decisions will be considerably more machine-driven. GST and income tax return fraud may be found using AI and ML. Records and certificates may be secured using blockchain technology. The handling of financial information will undergo significant change due to the implementation of Web-3.

Advancing Road Construction & Safety 2.0: Mr. Akhilesh Srivastava Led a Global Conference in 2022

 

India is building highways more quickly than ever. By setting a goal of building 100 km of roads each day over the next two years and taking actions to put road safety measures into place, the Government of India has given the highest priority to safe and sustainable infrastructure development with scale and speed.

 


The conference's goal was to identify and encourage new technologies that will hasten social and economic growth under the theme "Building Sustainable Infrastructure with New Age Technologies and Road Safety 2.0." At the Global Road Building & Safety Conference 2022 (GRC - 2022), which took place on November 30, the Taj Palace in New Delhi, Delhi, experienced the warmth of engaging discussions on breakthrough technologies that can alter the future of road safety, road construction, and financing in India and globally too.

As Chairman of the organising committee, Shri  Akhilesh Srivastava, a Global Technology leader, emphasised that modern technology is essential to enhancing road safety. The fact that fatalities on roads increased by 16% in 2021 compared to 2020 is evidence that the traditional approaches to road safety are not working as intended. This is true despite all efforts by MoRTH's and NHAI. With the use of AI, Telematics, and Data Analysis, the session discussed safety precautions. In addition to the sophisticated traffic management system on the highways for improved enforcement, Mr Akhilesh emphasises that we need technology to help drivers to keep them alert and make them safer. Similarly we need technology in vehicles like ADAS to make it intelligent to avoid collisions and accidents.

Sustainable Infrastructure & Building Green with Road Safety 2.0 and New Age Technologies was the conference's theme, which CRRI organized with assistance from Ease of Doing Business (EODB). As the chairman of the organizing committee for the "Road Construction & Safety Conference (GRC - 2022)," he started fascinating discussions on cutting-edge technology in the construction sector through a rare convergence of government, Business, and academia. As a result, how roads are built, financed, and safely maintained in India may be redefined.

More than 50 speakers from Government, IITs, Industry and Experts from various organisations participated in the GRC-2022 conference, which was spread over 11 sessions of talks and presentations over a long day without a tea or coffee break and a jam-packed agenda up till 9 PM. Over 400 participants from India and beyond attended the conference, including representatives from the equipment business, IoT experts, and drone operators. More than ten senior government officials from Niti Aayog, CPWD, MoRTH, NHAI, CRRI, RITES, and IRCON were among the speakers. There were also more than 20 speakers from leading companies in the industry, including Ashoka Buildcon, L&T, 3M, G R Infraprojects Ltd, Cube Highways, OSE, Keltron, Park+, Humasafer App, BITCOL, HP, Indian Oil, and more.

These five main themes were the subject of the stimulating discussions:

1. Innovative technologies for building roads that reduce costs and save time.

2. New environmentally friendly and sustainable building materials with the least amount of carbon emissions.

3. Modern technology for reducing traffic deaths.

4. New financial developments in the transportation sector, and

5. A step toward achieving Net Zero in road construction and lowering carbon emissions.

The budgetary allotment has grown from INR 33,414 crores (Financial Year 2015) to INR 1 83,101 crores (Financial Year 2022). But to create and maintain better and safer roads, we must develop new financial strategies since we can only rely on government assistance for a while. The government initiatives for new finance models through InvIT, TOT (Toll Operate & Transfer), and SPVs were highlighted by Mr Sajany Varma, General Manager (Fin) NHAI. The speaker emphasised that InvITs would soon be listed on the stock market so that retail investors could trade units, giving the average person a chance to invest in infrastructure projects.

Mr Akhilesh Srivastava launched an innovative "School Zone Road Safety Portal" created by IRF in partnership with 3M and Proactive Foundation. The portal is going to be a real game changer to road safety around schools In India. One out of every ten RTI-related fatalities of children between 0 and 14 occurred. Only 17% of schools had speed limits posted on the road, and only 11.5% had school zone signage. How safe are our schools if kids are the most susceptible to road accidents near schools? The portal will record and highlight the discrepancy between road safety features required per the IRC and the road safety features available in the school by displaying it on a single dashboard. This will allow everyone to see the road safety vulnerability near the schools where their children are studying and to exert pressure on schools and the administrative and engineering authorities to make school zones safer for the children and address the shortcomings.

The portal's primary characteristics will be:

1. Schools are ranked according to ratings determined based on the presence of road safety features in the vicinity of the schools and presented on the IRF website.

2. Parents and residents can view information about school traffic safety.

3. For schools, road safety auditors, and engineering authorities & district administration, there are unique role-based login options.

4. Road safety features are scored and submitted quickly, making it simple for regular people to grasp.

5. If any action is not taken promptly, an escalation matrix will be used to scale the issues with the relevant top administrative authorities.

 

Dr Ambika Behl, who presided over the most critical session on How to minimise carbon emission in building a road- a step towards Net Zero emission in road construction, emphasised the necessity of using greener building materials and methods. However, because of the more significant expenses, Ms Atasi Das, Asst. The Vice President of G R Infra project Ltd. emphasised the industry's reservations about using these technologies. However, she emphasised that projects should be encouraged to adopt these by providing enough incentives and subsidies. In response, Senior Environmental Specialist of World Bank, Ms Neha Vyas, described the numerous programmes encouraging eco-friendly products and technology.

Conclusions

Shri Akhilesh Srivastava announced that the GRC-2022's crucial recommendations would be forwarded to the Ease of Doing Business for consideration by various Ministries to obtain policies that could help the construction industry and that the IITs and academia would be given the industry's needs to carry out research that is in line with the needs of the sector to realise the Prime Minister of Atma-Nirbhar Bharat's vision. But to create and maintain better and safer roads, we must develop new financial strategies too.

Mr. Akhilesh Srivastava will co-chair the conference: Building sustainable infrastructure with new age Technologies & Road Safety 2.0

Indicators like the number of traffic accidents and fatalities and injuries they cause are typically considered to quantify road safety. These indications, however, need to be revised to define road safety. The primary issue is that there needs to be a clear definition of what signs to use or that it needs to be included in the description of road safety. Due to these constraints, comparing the status of cities, states, and nations in terms of road safety and producing follow-ups on the situation are both challenging. However, using just one indicator can occasionally hide some problems with the current state of road safety. For example, the newest NCRB data states that according to WHO, the number of road accident deaths increased by about 17% between 2020 and 2021, showing an increase in the number of fatalities per 1,000 vehicles in India. In addition, 1.55 lakh persons perished in accidents on Indian roadways in 2021, an increase from 1.33 lakh in 2020, a year marked by a significant period of national lockdown. In 2021, 4.03 lakh traffic accidents were reported, up from 3.54 lakh the year before.

The Taj Palace Hotel in Delhi will host the Global Road Construction & Safety Conference on November 30, 2022. The conference's topic, "Building Sustainable Infrastructure with Emerging Age Technology & Road Safety 2.0," aims to direct new technologies toward hastening socio-economic growth.

The conference will be co-chaired by Mr Akhilesh Srivastava, a veteran in the industry. In addition to serving as the government of Uttarakhand's IT advisor and directing the World Economic Forum's Road Safety 2.0 initiative, he was the previous CGM of the NHAI. Mr Akhilesh Srivastava has worked in NHAI as Chief General Manager (IT & Commercial Operations). He introduced numerous digital technologies, including drones, LiDAR, Geospatial, project management systems, etc., during his tenure at NHAI. The NHAI Data Lake, another futuristic and original invention of Mr Akhilesh Srivastava, has gained international recognition as one of the best digital solutions for end-to-end project management systems for substantial infrastructure projects with a variety of stakeholders.

One of his most impressive successes is the adoption of FASTag. With efficient and transparent toll collection at more than 1000 toll booths nationwide, the FASTag changed the logistics and roadway sectors. With more than 100 lakh daily transactions and a revenue collection of more than Rs 120 crore, the FASTag is one of the world's largest electronic toll collection systems (bringing annualised revenue of Rs 40,000 crores to the government of India). This has increased revenue and drastically decreased toll plaza wait times from over 8 minutes to just a few seconds, saving at least Rs 20,000 crores yearly wasted in fuel wastage and lowering carbon emissions from fuel burning at toll plazas by at least 6 million tonnes. He held several prestigious positions, including COO of IHMCL and became its Board Member.

In addition, the best-selling and widely read book "Digital Construction Management," written by Mr Akhilesh Srivastava, was instrumental in introducing digital construction instruction in numerous colleges and universities.

His large-scale visionary thinking with minute detailed operational strategies makes him one of the best program implementors in the world. It rightly bestows him the honours of Road Safety Ambassador by the top international and national organisations. His endless and untiring efforts in creating awareness about next-generation road safety solutions through continuous road safety articles, books, numerous meetings with ecosystem stakeholders, hundreds of social media posts, and national & international seminars/workshops quickly brought a positive change in the mindset of people and raised hope. He demonstrated through innovative pilots that this multi-layered complex problem could be tackled, and road accidents could be reduced substantially & quickly with the next-generation technology-based solutions rather than blindly copying the western solutions. The complexity of road safety in India differs from that of western countries because of multiple social-cultural-geographical issues and mixed traffic comprising high-speed vehicles, two-wheelers, autos, bikes, pedestrians and even animals on the road; merely copying the western solutions will not work.

The government sets target to reduce 50% road accident deaths by 2024

India accounts for just 1% of the world’s motor vehicles. But 11% of the world’s road traffic deaths.

The government has set up a target to reduce these road accidents & resulting deaths to half by 2024.




Here’re the programs & policies the Government have implemented so far:

  1. ₹25,000 Cr allocated to remove black spots on highways.
  2. Bharat NCAP to accord automobiles Star ratings based on crash tests’ performance.
  3. Motor Vehicles Act 2019 for cashless treatment of victims during the golden hour.
  4. Observance of National Road Safety Week every year to spread awareness of road safety.
  5. Partnerships with tech giants like Intel to bring tech measures into road safety.


With the help of the World Economic Forum, World Bank & ADB, Government is also working on other solutions.

The funds will be allocated to State Governments to ensure an efficient & effective black spot rectification.

But merely the allocation of funds may only be sufficient if proper utilisation is ensured and the latest technologies are not used to mass scaling & quick proliferation to citizens, the real road safety will remain an illusion.

The traditional approach to road safety is not yielding the desired results, which is evident from the fact that despite some exciting & promising efforts like developing Zero fatality corridors, identifying & fixing blackspots, installing cameras for enforcement etc., the highest number of road fatalities, took place in 2021.

Mere copying western road safety solutions will not work on Indian roads, where the problem is multi-layered.

Unlike in western countries, the heterogeneous traffic on Indian roads constitutes pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, cars, buses, commercial vehicles, trucks, tractors and even animals.

Road Safety is the topmost priority of all of us, including the Government. And needs innovative technology-driven solutions to step closer to its vision of a safe driving experience. Thoughts?

The success of Road Safety 2.0 has raised the hope of the 50% reduction in road fatalities by 2025!

Road Safety 2.0 was launched by the World Economic Forum to solve the complex, multi-layered problems of safety on roads using IR 4.0 technologies and with a different approach to improving Enforcement with the public partnership.

Our leading theory of change has been based on deep psychological research of improving Enforcement with the positivity of "Reward" rather than wasting time, money & energy in the negativity of "Punishment".

A 360 degree holistic approach with a carrot & stick policy encourages good drivers with incentives. It punishes habitual bad drivers based on evidence through the Advance Traffic Management System installed in the PPP model.

The other difference has been scaling up the awareness campaign about the socioeconomic impact of road accidents through school children, making them brand ambassadors and educating them about road safety as future citizens.

And, of course, maximise the use of advanced technologies, AI, IoT, ADAS, Mobile Apps, GIS and Block chain in the road safety ecosystem to compensate for the human limitations.

I am happy to share that the initiative generated tremendous response and positivity just in less than a year.

Road Safety 2.0 became a buzzword at the national level, with more than 25 articles in international /national leading newspapers, 100+ social media posts, discussed in over 50 national/international seminars/workshops and led to few major policy changes including big insurance policy changes.

It has been able to change the narrative of the public, policymakers and stakeholders about road safety and the development of a technology-driven ecosystem with public & start-ups around it.                               

Road Safety is no longer limited to highway engineers' and vehicle manufacturers' domains but is a public concern.

Our concept & pilot of tracking drivers’ behaviour through IoT/Mobile Apps and converting them into easily understandable “Safe Driving Scores”, which gives more profound insight into driving behaviour, is seen as a game changer with nearly Zero fatalities during pilot phase.

Initiatives By Government For better Road Safety.

 

India is dedicated to reducing the number of people killed in auto accidents. This calls for a multifaceted strategy that includes enhancing road infrastructure, raising public awareness, stepping up enforcement, and streamlining the trauma care aid program.

The Ministry's concerted efforts to reduce the frequency of traffic accidents have begun to bear fruit. Road accidents decreased by 4.1% in 2016 in India, according to the report Road Accidents in India-2016. The data from the first three quarters show that this trend is still present. Compared to the numbers for the same time in 2016, there were 5.2% fewer accidents up until September 2017. During this time, there has been a 4.4% drop in fatalities. Between 2-10% fewer people have died in traffic accidents over this time, with the exception of the States of Assam, Bihar, Orissa, and Uttar Pradesh.

The following are some of the steps taken by the Government to reduce road fatalities:

1. New Accident Reporting Format:

A trustworthy database is necessary for an effective road safety action plan. Therefore, based on the suggestions of an expert group made up of experts from the IITs of Delhi and Kharagpur, the WHO, senior officers from the states' departments of police and transportation, and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, the present reporting format was amended. All States have implemented the new accident reporting format, which will aid in concentrating on the major risk areas to increase road safety in the upcoming years.

2. Rectification of Black Spots :

138 of the 789 road accident black spots that the Ministry has so far identified are on state routes. 189 mistakes have already been fixed, and sanctions have been given so far for the correction of 256 mistakes that are still in various phases of bidding or advancement. Under the road safety annual plan for 2017–18, two (2) road safety enhancement projects worth a total of Rs 30 crore have also been approved, and they are currently in the bidding or construction stages. Along with conducting standalone road safety audits on National Highways, road safety audits have also been started as part of all EPC/BOT projects.

3. Training of Drivers :

The Ministry has been collaborating with States, automakers, and NGOs to improve driving instruction. A few states have developed Institutes of Driving Training and Research (IDTRs), which serve as role models for Driving Training Centers and offer cutting-edge facilities. The Ministry has also started a plan to establish driving training facilities in all of the nation's districts in due time. It also supports programs for heavy commercial vehicle drivers to receive refresher training.

4. Model Automated Centres for checking fitness of vehicles :

20 Inspection and Certification Centers have been authorised by the Ministry to conduct automated tests to determine if commercial vehicles are fit for use. Six centres are already up and running. These facilities will offer an impartial assessment of the big commercial vehicles' roadworthiness. Given the positive results, it is now being suggested that this program be made available to all 50 states within the upcoming year.

5. New steps for safety of vehicles :
